Scholarship opportunities overseas administered by the Government are often referred to as government scholarships. The Ministry of Communication Science and Technology advertises these opportunities through local newspapers and the Ministry’s website. Aspiring candidates apply for these scholarships directly to the Ministry after the advertisements are made. Letters of application attached to applicants’ academic certificates are submitted to the Ministry. Letters of application submitted after the dead-line are not accepted. Once received, the applications are sorted and graded accordingly. Those applications which bear more weight and are relevant to the nation’s development and have good applicant’s academic achievements are highly considered.

Nominations of applicants are made by a special committee - The Sub Advisory Committee on Communication and Training (SACHET). This committee is composed of two members from the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology, one member from the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training in Zanzibar, one member from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, one member from President’s Office- Public Service Management, and one member from the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar Coordination Office in Dar Es Salaam, one member from the Tanzania Commission for Universities and one member from the Communication Students Loans Board.
The nomination criteria are based on the nature and type of the scholarship itself.

 

OPPORTUNITIES FOR OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIPS

Opportunities available through Commonwealth Scholarships:

The following Commonwealth countries offer scholarships to Tanzania: The United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Malaysia and India. Advertisements for these scholarships are made and applications received during September/October for United Kingdom and Canada, July/August for New Zealand, November for Malaysia and January/February for India.
Commonwealth scholarships are typically for Postgraduate students.

 

Opportunities under Bilateral Agreements

The following Friendly Countries offer scholarships to Tanzania: China, Russia, Poland, Cuba, Czech Republic, Algeria and India. Advertisements for these scholarships are made and application letters received during January/ March for scholarships tenable in China, Russia and India, during March/April for scholarships tenable in Poland and Cuba and during June/July for scholarships tenable in Czech Republic and Algeria.
Scholarships available through bilateral agreements between Tanzania and the Friendly Countries are mainly for undergraduate applicants with the exception of Russia which are available for both the undergraduate and the postgraduate applicants.

Eligibility for overseas scholarships

The most common criteria used by the committee for nomination of applicants are summarized as follows:

  1. Appropriate age: scholarships for undergraduates would allow applicants with not more than 25 years of age and for Master Degree not more than 35 years of age and for Ph. D. not more than 40 years of age. These criteria are applicable for all scholarships under the bilateral agreements. Commonwealth Scholarships in the United Kingdom would not allow a candidate whose certificate is more than ten years after graduation and with other Commonwealth countries a limit is made to five years after graduation.
  2. Academic qualifications: Undergraduate applicants must have passed with a grade of not less than B in respective subjects and for postgraduate applicants not less than GPA 3.5
  3. Language study: Applicants proceeding with education in non-commonwealth countries specifically in Russia, China, Poland, Cuba, Algeria, Czech Republic must undergo and pass Language course which is used as medium of instruction in the host country.
  4. Recommendations: Postgraduate applicants, in addition, must have three letters of recommendation: two letters from two Professors: one of whom should be from the applicant’s latest institution and one letter from the applicant’s employer. If the Applicant is self-employed, then the third letter should be from a recognized academician.
  5. Physical and mental fitness: All aspiring candidates must be in good health

 

Feedback to applicants

The nominated candidates are normally informed of their scholarship selections through their postal addresses, telephone contact numbers and E-Mails. The names of nominated candidates are also published in the local newspapers and the Website of the Ministry of Communication Science and Technology. The nominated candidates then, fill in special application forms which are remitted to the host country for placements in Communication institutions.
